Publication Information Caring School Community™ (CSC) is a modified version of a program formerly known as the Child Development Project.
Country of Origin United States
Languages English
Tool Description CSC is a multiyear school improvement program that involves all students in grades K–6. The program aims to promote core values, prosocial behavior, and a schoolwide feeling of community. The program consists of four elements originally developed for the Child Development Project: class meeting lessons, cross-age "buddies" programs, "homeside" activities, and schoolwide community.
Application in the Field Applied internationally
Tool mainly used in United States
Stage of Development Well established
Evaluation and Research Studies/Technical Data available
Beneficiary Involvement in Design No information found
Evaluation Yes
Evaluation Description CSC has been extensively and rigorously evaluated in several studies over the last 20 years. These studies consistently found that in schools where the program was widely implemented, students showed significant benefits in a number of areas, including attitudes toward school and learning (e.g., had a greater sense of the school as a community, liked school more, worked harder, had higher test scores and grades in core academic subjects and were more engaged in their courses, had greater trust in and respect for teachers and had higher educational aspirations), feelings about the self, social and ethical attitudes and values, and behavior (e.g. students engaged in less misconduct at school and fewer delinquent behaviors), relative to students in closely matched comparison schools. For a detailed overview of the largest and most recent study of CSC, which involved an ethnically and socio-economically diverse sample of over 14,000 students from 12 program and 12 comparison schools in six districts across the US, please visit: Developmental Studies Center. Retrieved February, 2005 from http://www.devstu.org/cdp/pdfs/cdp_eval_summary.pdf. (The Caring School Community project was previously known as the Child Development Project.)
