Women’s Health and Well-being in Europe: Protecting Rights, Preventing Inequalities

According to the World Health Organisation, health represents ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ The Council of Europe has endorsed universality, access to quality care, equity, and solidarity as common values and principles underpinning the health systems of the EU Member States.

However, discriminatory gender roles still compromise the health of women and girls in Europe and, in turn, affect families and communities. There is a pressing need to address the range of barriers women can face in accessing health services, which consequently prevents them from fully utilising their fundamental right to health.

This timely International Symposium continues the debate on how to work towards an EU-wide policy framework on gender equality and non-discriminatory access to healthcare. It provides a key platform for the discussion of a better European regulatory framework aimed at strengthening prevention, protection and inclusion of women.

Improving Mental Health in the Workplace: Towards Better Prevention and Inclusion in Europe

Mental ill-health accounts for almost 20% of illnesses in Europe and mental health problems affect one in four people at some point in their life. This has a wider impact when mental ill-health leads to work absenteeism or the inability to find employment.

With the launch of the EU Joint Action on Mental Health and Well-being (February 2013), a three year initiative funded by the EU Health Programme, the European Union aims to create a framework for action in mental health policy at the European level. The Action brings together 45 associated and collaborating partners representing 27 EU Member States and associated countries.

This international symposium provides a timely opportunity for key stakeholders to discuss current frameworks and initiatives for action to improve mental health in the workplace.

For further details, please refer to the enclosed event brochure.

Do feel free to circulate this information to relevant colleagues within your organisation. In the meantime, to ensure your organisation is represented, please book online or complete and return the registration form at your earliest convenience in order to secure your delegate place(s).

According to the report developed under the EU Kids Online II project, even 98% of Polish children aged 9-16 use the Internet at least once a week, and the majority of them are online every day or almost every day. Children and young people use the Internet to learn and to have fun: they do their homework, play games, watch movies and listen to music, and/or communicate, inter alia, via the social networking websites. What are the rights and responsibilities of a contemporary digital citizen? Do they differ from those that exist in the real world? This issue, as well as the role of the network in the lives of the youngest users were discussed during the two days of the 6th International Conference "Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online" by almost 600 professionals.

With each and every year, the role of the Internet in kids’ lives is growing. Unfortunately, the number of illegal online content is increasing, too - according to the report by the Dyżurnet.pl team, last year this number increased by 10 per cent. That is why we must ensure that children and young people are able to use the Internet in the safest way possible, while at the same time promoting their personal development. The online environment is very dynamic. The conference has been held for many years, and every year we have more and more topics for discussion and deeper analysis - said Anna Rywczyńska, NASK research institute.

The agenda of the Conference tackled comprehensively the issues related to the Internet use by children and young people. The topics discussed included, inter alia, the challenges for the safety of children associated with the digital media convergence, e-commerce and the increasing popularity of mobile applications. The presentation of educational tools, targeted to both children and their parents, constituted an important event in the Conference agenda.

During the five previous editions of the Conference, we have succeeded in establishing a forum for exchanging views and expertise with the best specialists in the field of Internet safety. A cascade knowledge sharing model, developed throughout the years, has resulted in numerous initiatives being undertaken in local communities, especially during the annual celebration of the Safer Internet Day and summer action "Sieciaki on vacation". We do experience a growing consensus that the concern about online security and safety shall be a joint effort of many partners - said Agnieszka Wrzesień, Nobody's Children Foundation, the Chair of the conference.

The Conference was held in Warsaw, at the Novotel Warszawa Airport (ul. 1 Sierpnia 1).
For those interested in child safety issues who could not participate in this event, NASK provided online live streaming. The videos form conference presentations may be found at www.saferinternet.pl/conference

Running from 2010-2013, MHP-Hands is developing a set of implementation manuals for MHP. These will be available in 7 languages. Based on ProMenPol, it will also produce a training course in how to use the implementation manuals.

MHP-Hands aims to equip:

Teachers and administrations in schools

Human resources (HR) professionals, management representatives and occupational physicians in the workplace

Care workers, doctors, administrative staff and caregivers in older people’s living environments

To understand the factors critical to mental health maintenance and promotion and to initiate, implement and monitor policy and programme development in their organisations.

MHP-Hands will look to field-test the manuals in real life settings. You can take part in this activity by registering as an MHP-Hands member. MHP-Hands will provide training and support to all of the field trial sites.

If you would like to support the development of the MHP-Hands programme, please send an email to the Project Co-ordinator Dr Richard Wynne r [dot] wynne [at] wrc-research.ie and we will be in contact with you soon.
