Women’s Health and Well-being in Europe: Protecting Rights, Preventing Inequalities

According to the World Health Organisation, health represents ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ The Council of Europe has endorsed universality, access to quality care, equity, and solidarity as common values and principles underpinning the health systems of the EU Member States.

However, discriminatory gender roles still compromise the health of women and girls in Europe and, in turn, affect families and communities. There is a pressing need to address the range of barriers women can face in accessing health services, which consequently prevents them from fully utilising their fundamental right to health.

This timely International Symposium continues the debate on how to work towards an EU-wide policy framework on gender equality and non-discriminatory access to healthcare. It provides a key platform for the discussion of a better European regulatory framework aimed at strengthening prevention, protection and inclusion of women.

Konferencja poświęcona była szerokiemu spektrum zagadnień związanych z bezpieczeństwem dzieci i młodzieży w Internecie. Adresowana była do przedstawicieli sektora edukacyjnego, organizacji pozarządowych, wymiaru sprawiedliwości i organów ścigania oraz dostawców usług i treści internetowych.

The meeting of the representatives from the education sector, NGOs, justice law enforcement, and Internet service and content providers took place in due to the 6th International Conference "Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online" (at the end of the text you will find the conference materials and presentations of selected speakers in PDFs).

The Conference was organized by the Polish (Nobody’s Children Foundation and NASK) and German (klicksafe) Safer Internet Centers, established within the European Commission’s Safer Internet Programme.

The main partner of the conference was Orange Foundation. The event was held under the honorary patronage of:
- prof. Barbara Kudrycka, Minister of Science and Higher Education,
- Magdalena Gaj, President of the Office of Electronic Communications,
- Michał Boni, Minister of Administration and Digitization,
- Krystyna Szumilas, Minister of National Education.

According to the report developed under the EU Kids Online II project, even 98% of Polish children aged 9-16 use the Internet at least once a week, and the majority of them are online every day or almost every day. Children and young people use the Internet to learn and to have fun: they do their homework, play games, watch movies and listen to music, and/or communicate, inter alia, via the social networking websites. What are the rights and responsibilities of a contemporary digital citizen? Do they differ from those that exist in the real world? This issue, as well as the role of the network in the lives of the youngest users were discussed during the two days of the 6th International Conference "Keeping Children and Young People Safe Online" by almost 600 professionals.

With each and every year, the role of the Internet in kids’ lives is growing. Unfortunately, the number of illegal online content is increasing, too - according to the report by the Dyżurnet.pl team, last year this number increased by 10 per cent. That is why we must ensure that children and young people are able to use the Internet in the safest way possible, while at the same time promoting their personal development. The online environment is very dynamic. The conference has been held for many years, and every year we have more and more topics for discussion and deeper analysis - said Anna Rywczyńska, NASK research institute.

The agenda of the Conference tackled comprehensively the issues related to the Internet use by children and young people. The topics discussed included, inter alia, the challenges for the safety of children associated with the digital media convergence, e-commerce and the increasing popularity of mobile applications. The presentation of educational tools, targeted to both children and their parents, constituted an important event in the Conference agenda.

During the five previous editions of the Conference, we have succeeded in establishing a forum for exchanging views and expertise with the best specialists in the field of Internet safety. A cascade knowledge sharing model, developed throughout the years, has resulted in numerous initiatives being undertaken in local communities, especially during the annual celebration of the Safer Internet Day and summer action "Sieciaki on vacation". We do experience a growing consensus that the concern about online security and safety shall be a joint effort of many partners - said Agnieszka Wrzesień, Nobody's Children Foundation, the Chair of the conference.

The Conference was held in Warsaw, at the Novotel Warszawa Airport (ul. 1 Sierpnia 1).
For those interested in child safety issues who could not participate in this event, NASK provided online live streaming. The videos form conference presentations may be found at www.saferinternet.pl/conference

No Stress with Stress

Mental health - no topic for SME´s?

The effects of work related stress on employees and companies and the promotion of mental health at the workplace are widely discussed in science, politics and the public. Hence, the question remains how to motivate companies, especially small and medium sized ones (SME), to address these topics and improve working conditions to foster the mental health of employees. How specialized consulting activities could support SMEs in this issue is the central topic of a conference by G.I.B., the state institution for labour politics of the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia. Prof. Siegrist from Dusseldorf University, known for his "effort-reward imbalance model" of work related stress will give the introductory presentation. Results from different projects and the experiences of consultants, working with SME´s on stress and mental health issues, are also part of the agenda. The conference takes place on April 26th 2013 in Bottrop, Germany and is free of charge. Registration is required, conference language is German.
