Young People’s Mental Health in Europe: Promoting Prevention and Early Intervention Through Multi-Sector Cooperation

With more than half of the mental disorders of young people surfacing before the age of 25, it is essential to provide appropriate support and care at a sufficient early stage. Although the number and quality of the support services offered has considerably increased and improved, the overall share of young people opting to seek help from these channels is struggling to meet the existing offer.

This timely international symposium provides an invaluable opportunity to evaluate the current state of mental health policies for young people at EU level and to discover best practices in the field of prevention and early intervention. It will address innovative approaches to support young people’s mental health in both family and school settings, while also focusing on the action of health services in the promotion of mental well-being. This symposium will also address the role of new technologies and social media as a double-edged instrument in the hands of children and young adolescents.

Fostering Healthy Workplaces for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth

Workplace accidents in the EU claim more than 3 million victims per year and over 4,000 workers die due to serious accidents, according to a report issued by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (OSHA). The human suffering, as well as the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health is unacceptably high. Positive workplaces not only increase workers’ health, safety and wellbeing, but also companies' productivity and competitiveness. Studies have shown that for each Euro invested in prevention the return ranges between 1.29 and 2.89 Euros.
In April 2014, EU-OSHA launched the “Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress" campaign to raise awareness and provide practical advice and support for employers’ and workers’ representatives, managers and workers.

Also this year, building on previous strategies and consultations, the European Commission adopted the next Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work 2014-2020 so as to better protect European workers from accidents and diseases. The Framework aims to better implement current health and safety rules, as well to strengthen the prevention of work-related diseases.

This international symposium will provide an invaluable opportunity to discuss how the number of occupational accidents can be reduced especially in high risk industrial work environments, and consider an effective cross-border strategy to prevent psychosocial risks and other work-related diseases. The symposium will allow delegates to examine and assess projects, tools and best practices tackling occupational safety and health issues in Europe so as to create healthy workplaces and foster growth.

Public Policy Exchange welcomes the participation of all key partners, responsible authorities and stakeholders to exchange ideas and engage in thought-provoking topical debate.
Young People and Mental Health: Prevention and Early Intervention in Europe

According to the latest EU Youth Report, mental illnesses among young people are more common than ever in the European Union. An estimated 10-20% of young Europeans suffer from mental health illnesses, with one-fifth suffering from developmental, emotional and behavioural problems.

An estimated 10-20% of young Europeans suffer from mental health illnesses, with one-fifth suffering from developmental, emotional and behavioural problems.

Failure to treat mental health disorders in children can have a devastating impact on their future, resulting in reduced job and life expectations. Appropriate measures of prevention and early intervention need to be implemented not only to reduce health costs but also to realise larger savings, such as improved educational outcomes and reduced unemployment and crime.

This timely international symposium provides an invaluable opportunity to explore the effectiveness of current policy measures at the EU level to ensure the positive mental health of children and young people, and raise awareness of prevention and early intervention. The symposium will discuss the vital role of health practitioners, as well as schools and parents in identifying warning signs for children and young people at high risk of mental health problems.
Mental Health Throughout Life
Mental Illness exerts a heavy burden on affected individuals and societies as a whole, costing over 500 billion euros in Europe annually. Answering the challenge of finding new and better therapies, scientists from med psychiatry, neuroscience, as well as psychology and social science can build today on the enormous progress achieved in understanding how the brain functions and how it develops over time.

Mechanisms of vulnerability for mental illnesses over lifetime will be the focus of the Volkswagen Foundation’s second Herrenhausen Conference. Concentrating on particularly sensitive and susceptible phases of mental development (Sessions 1: Early Brain Development; Session 2: Adolescence; Session 3: Adulthood), renowned experts will share their latest research and insights into risk for and resilience against mental illnesses.

Building on this material, in a concluding Session on “Promoting Mental Health” new approaches for improving mental health and treating mental disorders will be highlighted.

What insights can be gained for prevention and social policy by taking into account the risk factors for developing mental illnesses throughout life? What are the barriers that need to be overcome in order to further expand the knowledge in the field and enlarge the spectrum of effective therapies for treating mental diseases?

Psychiatry is at a turning point and the long needed cooperation between natural and social sciences will help to create new impulses for solving the problems described and securing a high level of mental health. We are looking for pathways towards the scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow and want to give you the opportunity to discuss ideas which might still seem unachievable today but have transformative potential for tomorrow. We would be delighted if you would join us in this endeavour.

GovKnow inaugural Mental Health Conference - London 2012

In October 2011, the Centre for Mental Health estimated the cost of ill mental health to the economy at £105bn, more than the entire NHS budget. With this in mind, it is important that practitioners and stakeholders from across the public, private and third sectors come together to discuss the potential solutions to the challenges we face from ill mental health.

GovKnow are delighted to present our inaugural Mental Health Conference, a forum to discuss the current strategies in place to tackle mental health illnesses. This conference will feature contributions from some of the key policy makers and drivers within the mental health arena including those who work with offenders, elderly people, job seekers and also those who commission mental health services across the public sector.

It is now widely recognised that a ‘parity of esteem’ needs to be established between physical and mental wellbeing, and this conference will act as a driver to promote the issues affecting both patients and practitioners within the mental health arena.

We look forward to some key contributions from experts and stakeholders from across the public, private and third sectors on this cross cutting issue.

Topics to be discussed include:

No Health without Mental Health Strategy – 2011

Supporting people of all ages with mental health illnesses

Employment for those with mental health issues

Supporting providers of mental health services

The future of Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)

Improving the mental health of those who come into contact with the penal system

Supporting the families of those with mental health issues

Promoting excellent in mental health and wellbeing in the workplace

Providing mental health support for returning armed forces personnel

Strengthening commissioning for mental health services

This conference will provide attendees with the option to put questions directly to the speakers in our main plenary session, attend expert breakout sessions during the course of the day and share ideas with peers and service providers during our networking breaks. With all this in mind, this conference is a must attend for all those working within and alongside those with mental health issues.

Promoting Mental Health in Schools conference (One-day National Conference)

Practical identification and intervention strategies to improve pupils’ emotional well-being and mental health

Why attend Optimus Education's Promoting Mental Health in Schools Conference?

Children’s positive mental health remains integral to their emotional health and well-being; supporting this is just as important as protecting them from physical harm or abuse. But, many schools find themselves unable to identify children with mental health problems and unsure which is the appropriate care pathway to take.
