Tool Description Sandwell Healthy Schools Scheme (SHSS) is an award scheme that aims to improve attainment within schools through focusing on health improvement of the whole school community. SHSS provides a framework for supporting schools in identifying and developing key priorities for improving the health and well being of all individuals within the school community and it has four themes: 1) Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), including Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) and Drugs Education; 2) Healhty Eating; 3)Physical Activity; 4) Emotional Health and Wellbeing, including Bullying. These themes relato to both the shool curriculum and the emotional and physical learning environment in school.

Evaluation Description The evaluation found significant outcomes in following: healthy schools are improving at a faster rate than average; healthy schools are more inclusive with good standards of care for pupils; pupils attending a healthy primary school are less likely to be afraid of bullying; pupils attending a healthy secondary school are more likely to have a high self-esteem. Among Healthy Schools Team (99 schools) 38 have achieved the Healthy Schools Awards, 4 platinum, 14 gold, 11 silver and 9 bronze. Feedback from schools is very positive and staff are reporting a wide range of improvements in behaviour, punctuality, concentration. Pupils are enthusiastic about their involvement in the Scheme and are fully involved in the process
